Due to Australia's close geographic proximity to Indonesia, it's a common belief that the two countries have a massive trade relationship. However, according to Trade and Investment Minister Andrew Robb, two-way trade between Australia and Indonesia is only worth around $16 billion – far less than other partnerships throughout south-east Asia.
Mr Robb is on a mission to change this and improve trade potential moving forward. This started earlier this month with the Minister taking close to 400 senior business people from across various industries to the country.
In a November 17 media statement, he explained the scope of opportunity for those in premium food and beverage sectors, agricultural and food sustainability as well as advanced manufacturing.
"Australia's bilateral relationship with Indonesia is among our most important; we're very complementary in the skills and strengths we've both got, so there's great potential to grow our economic partnership," he said.
"We are putting a lot of work into encouraging more Australian businesses to establish a presence in Indonesia, which will help build linkages, mutual interests and trust between our countries."
What are Australia's main exports to Indonesia?
At present, Australia's main commodity to Indonesia is wheat. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this is worth $1.2 billion to the national economy per annum.
Other key exports include live animals (excluding seafood) ($560 million), sugar, molasses and honey ($479 million) and beef ($280 million).
However, Mr Robb is seeking wider investment in other industry areas to boost Australian exports to Indonesia.
