Potato industry reliant on positive biosecurity standards

Potatoes are a vital part of the Australian economy.

While many Australians don't think twice about where their chips are made, it is important to recognise the power of the national potato industry. According to Potatoes South Australia, 1.25 million tonnes are produced every year – making up 20 per cent of all vegetables grown in Australia.

Additionally, the potato industry is worth more than $600 million per financial year, thanks to both strong demand nationally and from offshore. However, while this sector is robust for the economy, there are risks that threaten to derail its progress.

Potato levy-funded research and development

One example of this is in relation to biosecurity. During any stage of their growing and transportation, potatoes are at risk from harmful pests and diseases. As such, the leading horticultural body AUSVEG has highlighted some of effective biosecurity measures that farmers are implementing in its latest Grower Success Stories publication.

AUSVEG spokesperson Shaun Lindhe explained the importance of food producers of maintaining strict biosecurity standards.

"Maintaining vigilant biosecurity practices is a critical safeguard for keeping Australia's shores free from devastating pests, diseases and viruses, and improving productivity for potato growing businesses," he said.

"Ensuring your property is protected from pests and diseases can also be vital for an entire growing community, as outlined by a featured seed potato grower from Crookwell, New South Wales who enforces strict biosecurity protocols on his farm to uphold the area's long-standing reputation as a producer of clean potato seed."

The publication outlines that some farmers are engaging innovative technique to protect their potatoes from diseases, while others are learning best practice from overseas professionals.

Transporting potatoes with precision

While biosecurity is vital on the farm, it is just as important during the transportation from the station to the packers and onto the supermarket. During this stage, food producers need to trust that their potatoes are safe from disease and general damage before they hit the shelves. This is where the collapsible OzCrate from Eco Pallets is useful.

One advantage is that they don't attract mould or dust contamination. Made entirely of either polyethylene or polypropylene, these pallets are manufactured under high temperatures. This inherent pressure creates a sealed material that doesn't absorb moisture and is easily washed.

As such, it is perfect for transporting potatoes and other produce across Australia and around the world. If you would like more information about our collapsible crate, feel free to reach out to us personally.
